Why Babies Wake Every Hour (And Why It Doesn't Usually Resolve on Its Own)

By Mwende Kimweli | Pediatric Sleep Consultant | Momzy Network

It's one of the questions I hear most often from exhausted parents:

"My baby wakes every hour. Is this normal?"

For many families, this doesn't happen overnight.Perhaps your baby slept well for months, then suddenly everything changed. Nights became unpredictable, naps shortened, bedtime became a struggle, and before you knew it, you were waking every hour alongside your baby.

At first, everyone reassures you.

"It's just a phase."

"They'll grow out of it."

"My baby did the same thing."

"Just wait it out."

So you do.

Weeks pass. Then months. And you're still exhausted.

The truth is, while some sleep disruptions are temporary, babies don't usually wake every hour for months without an underlying reason.

Sleep regressions are often where it begins

One of the most common reasons babies suddenly begin waking frequently is a sleep regression.

Sleep regressions occur during important stages of brain development when your baby's sleep patterns mature and change. These developmental leaps are completely normal, but they often disrupt previously good sleep.

Common regressions occur around:

  • 4 months
  • 8–10 months
  • 12 months
  • 18 months
  • 2 years

During these periods, babies may:

  • Wake more frequently overnight
  • Resist naps
  • Fight bedtime
  • Need more reassurance
  • Seem impossible to settle

The regression itself is not the problem.

The problem is what happens afterwards.

When a temporary regression becomes a long-term sleep challenge

Many parents understandably begin doing whatever works to get everyone back to sleep.

You may:

  • Rock your baby every time they wake.
  • Feed them to sleep repeatedly throughout the night.
  • Hold them for every nap.
  • Drive them around the neighbourhood.
  • Bring them into your bed.
  • Stay awake watching them.

These strategies often help in the moment because everyone is exhausted.

But if they continue long after the regression has passed, babies can begin to rely on those same conditions every time they transition between sleep cycles.

This is why many parents tell me:

"The regression never ended."

In reality, the developmental leap ended weeks ago, but the sleep habits that developed during that period remained.

Why parents wait so long to seek help

One pattern I've noticed working with families is that parents rarely ignore the problem because they don't care. They wait because they're hopeful.

Someone tells them:

"It will get better."

Another parent says:

"Mine eventually stopped."

Google offers dozens of different solutions. Friends recommend completely different approaches.

Parents try one method. Then another. Then another.

Eventually, many become overwhelmed and begin to believe:

"Maybe this is just who my baby is."

But babies aren't meant to wake every hour for months on end simply because "that's how they are."

When frequent waking continues, it's worth understanding why.

Every baby has a reason

No two babies are identical.

Frequent night waking can be influenced by many factors, including:

  • Developmental changes
  • Inconsistent sleep routines
  • Sleep associations
  • Overtiredness
  • Age-appropriate wake windows
  • Feeding patterns
  • Environmental factors

Understanding the cause is far more valuable than endlessly trying random solutions.

That's why professional sleep support isn't about teaching babies to sleep through the night overnight.

It's about understanding your child's unique sleep patterns and creating a plan that works for your family.

You don't have to accept exhaustion as normal

Somewhere along the way, many parents begin believing that constant exhaustion is simply part of parenting.

It isn't. Yes, babies wake. Yes, regressions happen. Yes, parenting can be tiring.

But living in survival mode for months or even years should never be accepted as the only option.

With the right guidance, many families discover that peaceful nights are possible again.

Not through guesswork.

Not through endless Googling.
