Why Babies Wake Every Hour (And Why It Doesn't Usually Resolve on Its Own)

Image
By Mwende Kimweli | Pediatric Sleep Consultant | Momzy Network It's one of the questions I hear most often from exhausted parents: "My baby wakes every hour. Is this normal?" For many families, this doesn't happen overnight.Perhaps your baby slept well for months, then suddenly everything changed. Nights became unpredictable, naps shortened, bedtime became a struggle, and before you knew it, you were waking every hour alongside your baby. At first, everyone reassures you. "It's just a phase." "They'll grow out of it." "My baby did the same thing." "Just wait it out." So you do. Weeks pass. Then months. And you're still exhausted. The truth is, while some sleep disruptions are temporary, babies don't usually wake every hour for months without an underlying reason. Sleep regressions are often where it begins One of the most common reasons babies suddenly begin waking frequently is a sleep regression ....

When Google Becomes Your Sleep Consultant And Why That Often Backfires

Image
It’s 2AM. Your baby is crying again. You’ve fed, rocked, changed, and checked everything. You’re exhausted and wondering if this is just what motherhood is supposed to feel like. So you reach for your phone and open Google. Within seconds, you have answers: “Let your baby cry it out.” “Don’t let your baby cry.” “Feed more.” “Stretch wake windows.” Every article sounds certain. Every method promises results. So you choose one and hope tonight will be different. But here’s what often happens. You try one approach. It doesn’t work. You switch. Then adjust. Then try again. What begins as a search for solutions turns into a cycle of trial and error. And instead of improving, sleep becomes more unpredictable. I’ve worked with parents who started with a baby waking twice a night. After trying multiple online methods, their baby began waking every hour. Not because they failed but because they were applying general advice to a very specific situation. This is the problem with using Googl...

Can a 6-Month-Old Sleep Through the Night? What Every Parent Should Know

Image
By Mwende Kimweli | Pediatric Sleep Consultant | Momzy Network One of the most common questions I receive from parents is: "Can my 6-month-old sleep through the night?" The simple answer is: Yes—many healthy babies are developmentally capable of sleeping through the night by around six months of age. But here's where many parents become frustrated. They hear that babies can sleep through the night, yet their own baby is still waking every two hours. They begin wondering whether something is wrong or whether they simply need to feed their baby more. Unfortunately, this is where one of the biggest myths surrounding baby sleep begins. The biggest myth: "Just feed the baby more." Across many Kenyan households, we've grown up believing that food is the solution to sleep. Parents are often told: "Add porridge." "Start solids earlier." "Feed more before bedtime." "Your baby is waking because they're hungr...

Rest Is Not a Luxury: Changing the Culture of Motherhood in Kenya

Image
Somewhere along the way, exhaustion became a badge of honor in motherhood. The more tired a mother is, the more society praises her sacrifice. The less sleep she gets, the more “dedicated” she is seen to be. And if her baby actually sleeps well? People look confused, suspicious, or even judgmental. As a sleep consultant working with families in Kenya, I have noticed a pattern that we rarely talk about openly: rest is often not prioritized in our homes, especially for mothers. Many Kenyan mothers are running households, raising children, building careers, managing businesses, supporting extended families, and carrying emotional responsibilities around the clock. Yet sleep is treated like a luxury instead of a basic human need. And culturally, we have normalized it. A mother who says she slept only three hours is often met with laughter and comments like, “Welcome to motherhood.” A baby without a routine is considered normal. A baby with a schedule is sometimes labeled “Westernized.”...
